Khan’s Tutorial Helps 339 (and Counting!) SHSAT Students Gain Acceptance to NYC’s Esteemed Specialized High Schools

Julius Freyra

New York, NY - March 21, 2019 – This past Monday marked the release of the results of the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), the sole determinant of admission into New York City’s prestigious Specialized High Schools. Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School offer acceptances to a total of about 3,000 students per year out of 30,000 students who take the challenging exam. This year, due to Mayor DeBlasio’s expansion of the Discovery Program, there is a scarcity of Specialized High Schools seats and overall more competition due to higher cut off scores.

The SHSAT program at Khan’s Tutorial (KT) is conducted year round with many students starting right after their 6th grade state exams (in May of 6th grade) taking part in KT’s Pre-SHSAT Program. In light of the recent changes to the exam, Khan’s Tutorial has been dedicated to updating its curriculum and test taking strategies to better prepare students, leading to the 3rd consecutive year of 330+ acceptances despite exam changes. Since 1994, KT has helped over 3,337 students gain admission to these competitive schools, many coming from working class, new-immigrant minority families. As families continue to call and report scores, this year’s results total is expected to increase by the end of the week.

In day 4 of collecting exam results, Khan’s Tutorial student, Sheikh Alif, has been named KT SHSAT 8th Grade High Scorer, scoring a 652 on his way to Stuyvesant High School. Also, KT SHSAT 9th grade High Scorer Saptarshi Barua, scored a 665 which is an impressive score for the challenging 9th grade SHSAT. In addition to Shiekh & Saptarshi, Khan's Tutorial boasts several high scoring students who scored above 600 and gained acceptance to the top three Specialized High Schools.

The breakdown of KT’s acceptances in terms of schools are:

This year Khan’s Tutorial has helped 34 minority students from black and Hispanic backgrounds gain acceptance to the Specialized High Schools through its SHSAT Program, The Dr. Mansur Khan SHSAT Opportunity Scholarship Program, partnerships with Harlem Dreamchasers and The Brooklyn Tech STEM Program. Furthermore, KT SHSAT students make up four out of the seven total black students accepted to Stuyvesant High School across New York City and three out of the twelve total black students accepted to the Bronx High School of Science.

In fall of 2019, nearly 9% of Stuyvesant’s incoming freshman class will be made up of KT students, over 10% of Bronx Science’s class will be made up of KT students, and over 8% of Queens High School for the Sciences at York College’s class will be made up of KT students.

The team at Khan’s Tutorial has strived to boost student success by keeping parents involved, holding regular parent-teacher conferences, and sharing best practices with families, including limited TV and social media. Additionally, students have benefited from increased daily practice, effective communication with family, and a fun learning environment at each of Khan’s Tutorial’s locations.

This upcoming weekend students and their families will celebrate a year of hard work at KT’s Acceptance Weekend celebrations. Families will also receive invitations to KT’s Annual SHSAT Awards Ceremony taking place at the Colden Auditorium at Queens College next month.

“This past year we’ve expanded our scholarship program, making all KT students eligible and rewarding top scorers with one free extra month of workshop and bootcamp classes as well as one free extra hour of tutoring and mentorship about the high school admissions process every single week. We are grateful that more families are putting in the extra hours of practice and attending all parent teacher conferences and classes. Congratulations to all the families that gained acceptance this week, with a special congratulations to our KT 9th Grade SHSAT High Scorer, Saptarshi Barua. We look forward to celebrating with you all at KT’s Acceptance Weekend and KT’s Annual Awards Ceremony next month,” said Dr. Ivan Khan, CEO & President of Khan’s Tutorial.

With 11 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and in the Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Sunnyside, Ozone Park, and Floral Park neighborhoods of Queens, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income, new immigrant neighborhoods. Over 3,337 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
