New York, NY - March 13, 2018 – Last Wednesday marked the release of the results of the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), the sole determinant of admission into New York City’s prestigious Specialized High Schools. Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School offer acceptances to a total of about 3,000 students per year out of 30,000 students who take the challenging exam.

The SHSAT program at Khan’s Tutorial (KT) is conducted year round with students starting classes 8-12 months before their exam. Since 1994, KT has helped over 2,972 students gain admission to these competitive schools. More results are expected to roll in this week.

The breakdown of KT’s acceptances in terms of schools are:

  • Stuyvesant: 68
  • Bronx Science: 92
  • Brooklyn Tech: 125
  • Brooklyn Latin: 52
  • HSMSE: 4
  • Lehman: 1
  • York: 9
  • Staten Island: 3
  • LaGuardia: 3

The breakdown of KT’s Top SHSAT Scorers are:

  • Shrey P. – 665 (Stuyvesant High School)
  • Aaron C. - 658 (Stuyvesant High School)
  • Mumtahana I. – 638 (Stuyvesant High School)
  • Manahil K – 636 (Stuyvesant High School)
  • Fahmid H. – 636 (Bronx High School of Science – Bronx Resident, ranked Bronx Science first)
  • Ishraq M. – 635 (Stuyvesant High School)
  • Tobias A. – 633 (Bronx High School of Science – Bronx Resident, ranked Bronx Science first)

Approximately 9% of Stuyvesant’s incoming class, 9% of Brooklyn Technical High School’s incoming class, and 12% of Bronx High School of Science’s incoming class will be Khan’s Tutorial students.

This past weekend students and their families celebrated a year of hard work at KT’s Acceptance Weekend celebrations. Families also received invitations to KT’s Annual SHSAT Awards Ceremony taking place at the Colden Auditorium at Queens College.

Over the past 20 years, Bengali has become the second most common non English  language spoken at home for ALL Specialized HS students, after Mandarin Chinese, before Korean and Spanish.

“We are extremely happy to celebrate the success of all KT Specialized High School accepted students. This journey started one to two years ago for many of our hardest working families at Khan’s Tutorial. In total, we are proud that as a team we were able to excel with the new changes to the SHSAT, and we look forward to helping hundreds more this year. If my father, the late Dr. Mansur Khan was with us he would be particularly thrilled for Khan’s Tutorial families whose second child gained acceptance to a Specialized High School.

It’s been a pleasure meeting with SHSAT accepted students and their families from Brooklyn, the Bronx, and all over Queens this past weekend. We look forward to celebrating with everyone at the KT Annual Awards Ceremony early next month,” said Dr. Ivan Khan, CEO & President of Khan’s Tutorial.

“I’m extremely proud of all of our students and I’m thrilled for these families. Our team here at Khan’s Tutorial has been at the forefront of the new SHSAT changes, working tirelessly to prepare our students for any upcoming challenges. Due to the hard work of our Instructors, Managers, Directors, and of course our SHSAT curriculum team of education experts, we’ve been able to surpass 350 accepted students yet again,” said Vice President and Director of the SHSAT Program Mohammad Hossain.

“I am very happy to see our hard working students return to Khan’s with the amazing news of their SHSAT Acceptance. Students, make sure that you thank your parents for helping you every step of the way. Every week I speak with so many dedicated mothers and fathers. It’s very rewarding to finally see everyone’s hard work pay off. We look forward to celebrating with these families at our awards ceremony next month,” said Mrs. Nayeema Khan, Khan’s Tutorial Chairperson.

With 11 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and in the Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Sunnyside, Ozone Park, and Floral Park neighborhoods of Queens, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income, new immigrant neighborhoods. Over 2,972 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
