Khan’s Tutorial’s Dynamic SHSAT Curriculum is Confirmed by Recent Specialized High School Handbook Release

Queens, NY – The NYC Department of Education’s 2017-2018 Specialized High School Handbook, released this month, has confirmed Khan’s Tutorial’s changes to is renowned SHSAT curriculum. Since the Department of Education announced that changes would be made to the SHSAT earlier this year, Khan’s has worked tirelessly to revamp its entire program by updating the curriculum & KT Original Diagnostics, revising test taking strategies, and training Instructors to help students adapt to the changes.

Major changes to the SHSAT include: 
1. ELA section - 
The verbal section now consists of revising and editing questions as well as the original reading comprehension. Scrambled paragraphs & Logical Reasoning questions are no longer featured in the exam.
2. Mathematics section - In addition to multiple choice questions there will be 5 grid in questions.
3. Answer Choices - Multiple choice items will have 4 answer choices instead of the original 5 answer choices.
4. Field Test Items - Additionally, the exam will now feature “field test items.” Each section will include a few questions that will not count towards the student’s score. Students will not know which of the questions are field test questions.
5. Testing Time – Finally, the testing time for the SHSAT has increased from 150 minutes to 180 minutes.

Important dates:
1. All students must register for the SHSAT between September 7, 2017 and October 12, 2017 with their guidance counselor.
2. SHSAT tickets will be available for distribution Wednesday, October 18, 2017.
3.  The SHSAT will be administered to all 8th graders on Saturday, October 21, 2017& Sunday, October 22, 2017.
4. The SHSAT will be administered to all 9th graders on Sunday, October 29, 2017 & Saturday, November 4, 2017.

A total of 2,610 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
