QueensNY – April 13, 2017 - Yesterday Khan’s Tutorial students and leaders were invited along with NYC high school students, top high school student leaders, unions, and elected officials to LaGuardia Community College for Governor Andrew Cuomo’s college affordability plan announcement. Several leaders from Khan’s Tutorials High School Achievement Program joined Governor Andrew Cuomo and Secretary Hillary Clinton on stage for the ceremonial bill signing of the nation's first four year tuition-free college plan for middle class families into law.

"It was an incredible feeling for all of us at Khan's to see our high school students and leaders join Governor Andrew Cuomo & Secretary Hillary Clinton on stage for today's historic signing. At Khan's we pride ourselves on being able to help low income & middle income families increase their chances at a free college education. Our team fully supports the Excelsior Scholarship and the lasting impact it will leave to educate all New Yorkers for life," said Dr. Ivan Khan, CEO & President at Khan’s Tutorial.

The scholarship program, entitled the Excelsior Scholarship, will provide New York State families earning less than $125,000 with access to free tuition if the student attends a CUNY or SUNY. Students participating in the program will need to meet certain academic standards, attend school full time, and remain in the state post graduation for the equivalent amount of years they received the scholarship.

“As the head of the High School Achievement Program at Khan’s Tutorial I can proudly say that we are firm believers that every student should be able to obtain a college education regardless of their socioeconomic background and without fear of crippling student debt.  The Excelsior scholarship will change the lives of thousands of families, particularly the low-income and new immigrant families we serve at Khan’s Tutorial every day. As educators, our goal is to empower the communities we serve, and this program will be the catalyst for a huge change for the better in our state,” said Tasneem Imam Khan, Director of High School Achievement Program.

With 10 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and in the Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Ozone Park, and Floral Park neighborhoods of Queens, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income, new immigrant neighborhoods. Over 2,606 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
