On April 5, 2014, Khan’s Tutorial (KT) hosted its Annual SHSAT Awards Ceremony for their students who gained acceptance to NYC’s Specialized High Schools. Just weeks ago the results of the SHSAT were released across NYC. This week, accepted students and their families gathered to celebrate a year of hard work and the resulting success.

The SHSAT program at KT is conducted year round with students starting classes 8-12 months before their exam. Over the last 20 years, KT has helped over 1,625 students gain admission to these schools. This year alone, KT helped a record 185 students gain acceptance to the new Specialized High Schools, including Stuyvesant High School, the Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School. “We’re thrilled to announce that we helped this many students this year and we look forward to being able to help more and more students and families in the future,” said Mohammad Hossain, Director of KT’s SHSAT Program.

The following list illustrates the number of Khan’s Tutorial students accepted into each Specialized High School:

Stuyvesant High School – 33 Khan’s Tutorial students

The Bronx High School of Science – 53 Khan’s Tutorial students

Brooklyn Technical High School – 63 Khan’s Tutorial students

The remaining 36 students were accepted to the following prestigious Specialized High Schools in NYC: The Brooklyn Latin School, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College, Staten Island Technical High School and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Currently, 8% of the students from Stuyvesant High School, the Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School are Khan’s Tutorial students, most of whom are South-Asian Americans and who comprise one of the fastest growing communities in NYC.

The Annual SHSAT Awards Ceremony is KT’s largest event of the year, with SHSAT students, their families, and KT staff members attending the celebration. Highlights of the night included speeches from several outstanding students: Justin Jairam of KT Jackson Heights, Ibnul Jahan of KT Brooklyn, and Joshua Omolede of KT Castle Hill in the Bronx.

Justin Jairam retook the challenging exam and gained acceptance to Stuyvesant as a 9th grader after initially attending Brooklyn Technical High School.

Ibnul Jahan achieved a high score of 701 on the SHSAT, being just one of 10 students who scored above a 600.

Joshua Omolede, a student at KT Castle Hill in the Bronx displayed immense improvement and growth during his time at KT’s SHSAT program, while also gaining scholarships to private schools. Due to the increase of high scores in the Bronx, KT has expanded to two locations in the Bronx area: KT Castle Hill and KT Parkchester.

Guest speakers at the ceremony included Dr. Abdul Momen, the Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, and Costas Constantinides, District 22 Councilman. Finally, KT recognized many of its excellent Directors and Instructors for their great achievement in helping our students improve academically throughout the year. “We are so excited that we were able to connect our students to our supporting staff, inspiring community leaders, and of course each other at tonight’s ceremony. We have students from all over New York City who gained admission and just knowing you have a whole community’s support will make for an easier transition into high school. Best of luck to our students; they will always be a part of the Khan’s Tutorial family,” said Dr. Ivan Khan, CEO of Khan’s Tutorial.

With 9 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, including Brooklyn, the Bronx, Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Ozone Park, and Floral Park, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income neighborhoods. A total of 1,625 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
