Khan Foundation Celebrates Third Year of College Access Program with Graduation Ceremony

Queens, NY— Last week, scholars in Khan Foundation's College Access Program celebrated their graduation. The ceremony took place at the Harvest Room in Jamaica, Queens. The College Access Program works closely with 12th grade low-income Queens residents and their families to help students find, apply, and get into competitive colleges while helping them secure scholarships. Special guests in attendance include Akshar Patel, Community Liason for Councilman Daneek Miller, Mizan Chowdhury, Candidate for Congress, and Horace Davis, Founder of the Caribbean American Society of NY.

New York, NY - March 13, 2018 – Last Wednesday marked the release of the results of the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), the sole determinant of admission into New York City’s prestigious Specialized High Schools. Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School offer acceptances to a total of about 3,000 students per year out of 30,000 students who take the challenging exam.

High Achieving Khan’s Tutorial Student, Tanvir C., Receives Acceptance to Johns Hopkins University

Khan’s Tutorial would like to congratulate student Tanvir C. for his acceptance to Johns Hopkins University. Tanvir is also waiting on news from an Ivy League School sometime next month. A long time student at KT, Tanvir started classes as a second grader and later returned for SAT classes. Through KT’s SAT program led by Columbia graduate Ms. Tasneem Imam Khan. Tanvir scored a 1520 on his first SAT attempt and later super scored at 1560. He currently maintains a 105 GPA at William C. Bryant High School and plans to pursue a career in the sciences.

Khan’s Tutorial Student Iftida Faria Wins 1st Place for NYU Rise for Rohingya Essay Contest

Manhattan NY - Last week, Khan’s Tutorial student and Brooklyn Tech Junior, Iftida Faria, won 1st place in the John Sexton Essay Contest for The Rise for Rohingya Campaign. The contest invited all NYC high school students to participate in a creative essay challenge about the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.  In her award-winning essay, Iftida spoke about how high school students could help Rohingya refugees. As first place winner, Iftida received a $300 Amazon gift card, a plaque from New York University President Emeritus, John Sexton, and was featured on the Rise for Rohingya website.

New York, NY – Earlier this month, Khan’s Tutorial hosted a dinner for Instructors in their renowned SHSAT Program. Last year a record breaking 398 students gained acceptance to the Specialized High Schools through KT’s program. Khan’s Tutorial’s Instructors have work tirelessly with students to tackle the new SHSAT through weekly classes, workshops, boot camp sessions, and study hall. Additionally, Instructors conduct mandatory Parent Teacher Conferences to update families on students’ progress and enforce productive study habits at home. The dinner celebrated the hard work of over 40 KT SHSAT Instructors who worked with students over the last year.

Khan’s Tutorial 2017 SHSAT Acceptance Total Reaches 397 through the Discovery Program

Khan’s Tutorial would like to congratulate three KT SHSAT students who recently gained acceptance to a Specialized High School through the Discovery Program.

The recently expanded Discovery Program allows students who miss the cut off score for a Specialized High School to gain acceptance through a summer program. Students must have missed the score within a certain range and meet specific eligibility requirements, such as low-income status.Essentially, it is a second opportunity for students who did not gain acceptance the first time.

Dr. Ivan Khan supports City Council Candidates in favor of preserving the SHSAT – candidate positions will affect South Asian students’ access to Specialized High Schools

New York, New York -- The Chinese American Citizens Alliance of Greater New York (CACAGNY) recently surveyed Chinese American Candidates running for office in the New York City September 12th Primary, asking whether they presently support keeping the single merit based exam to the Specialized Highs Schools of New York City. Currently, the SHSAT is the only way to gain admission into the Specialized High Schools such as Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech. These are the country’s best public high schools and predominantly Asian, however, they have come under attack for not being more diverse. Several elected officials claim the exam should be eliminated because it is unfair and preventing diversity at these schools.
